Sociology/Criminology Prison Trip 2024

Trip to Shepton Mallet Prison in Somerset on 21st June 2024 for Sociology & Criminology students.

The trip will take place at Shepton Mallet Prison in Somerset on 21st June 2024. A coach will leave college at 09:00 and is scheduled to return at 16:30. The day will involve the following activities:

1) Prison Tour – The experience starts in reception, where prisoners were processed and taken in the wings, exercise yard, healthcare, and execution room. The tour includes an in-cell experience, giving students the opportunity to step behind the cell doors and get a glimpse into the life of a prisoner.

2) Educational Activity – Students will participate in an activity to develop their understanding of crime and punishment in the UK. They will cover: o How the media can influence how people and society think about crime and punishment o The role the media plays in public perception about certain types of crime and the impact on punishment, reform and rehabilitation o How the media can misrepresent the nature of crime 3

) Cell Escape – A team building and problem-solving challenge in which students are given an allotted time to escape by solving puzzles and clues. This encourages collaborative working.

4) Self-guided Discovery – Supported by their Tour Guide, students will explore the prions in small groups completing activity booklets.
